Plans regarding this game going on!

Hey there! Hope everyone is doing good. Its been a few days since gmtk jam has been ended. And I got a bit busy after that in making the devlog of the game I made. (Give it a watch if you wanna see how I made Loop Line here)

So, I wanted to give a few updates regarding the game. I have been working on some design aspects of the game to make it more interesting and turn it into a more complete game. I have changed a few things in the game and planned a lot of new ideas for the game, new content, new ways to play the game and solve levels etc. And that's what I will be sharing with you guys who played my game and still want to play it with new content and all.

Changed Controls

Upon the feedback given by many people during the jam's voting period, I have changed the controls of the game from W/S to A/D, Right Arrow/Left Arrow. To make the controls a bit more intuitive. Along with that, I also changed the tutorial text and made prompts better with showing the keys.

(I might add the option for keybinding in the future if I have the time for it, and these prompts will then be displaying the key set for movement.)

This was the only change I have made alongside some other code changes that many won't care about :p

Future Plans

New Obstacle Types

Currently, the game has only 1 type of obstacle, Spikes. I had plans since the beginning to add multiple obstacles. But couldn't in the jam, So since the jam is completed, and now I have time to work on this game, I planned a few more obstacle types.

Currently I have these in mind:

  • Moving Obstacles (Some will follow player, some will move randomly on the path, or vertically tween along their y positions)
  • Blocking Obstacles (Kinda like spikes, but won't kill player, making players choose an alternative route)
  • Unlockable Obstacles (Simple doors requiring keys to be unlocked to be able to pass through them)

That's all the obstacles I currently have in mind. Will be thinking about a few more to add more variety.

Portals

For more interesting puzzles, I will making a chapter of levels with multiple paths in a level and portals will be the way to travel across them. There will also be some variety of portals, like one-way portal, two-way portal or one-time-use portal etc.

Some Purpose for Star Collectibles

In the original idea, the plan was to make stars essential collectibles, that the player must collect to finish game 100% but due to time limit of jam, I couldn't add that. So I will be doing that now. Cuz it will add some complexity to the game and levels. As to collect some stars, player might have to plan their route.

That's all for now. Thanks for reading this devlog. I will be updating the game as I get the time. See you in the next devlog :p
